Relapse prevention is crucial because GAD often follows a waxing-and-waning course; maintaining skills learned in therapy and gradually tapering medication when appropriate can reduce recurrence.
Overall, GAD is a mechanistically grounded anxiety disorder involving threat-circuit dysregulation, maladaptive cognitive loops centered on worry and uncertainty, and sustained stress-system activation. Accurate diagnosis, evaluation for medical and substance contributors, and timely evidence-based interventions—especially CBT and SSRIs/SNRIs when indicated—provide the best pathway to sustained symptom improvement and functional recovery.
