Benzodiazepines may provide short-term relief by enhancing GABA-mediated inhibition but carry risks including sedation, cognitive impairment, dependence, and withdrawal; therefore, they are generally used selectively and time-limited. Buspirone can be considered in some cases of chronic worry, and other agents may be tailored to symptom profile and comorbidity. Medication decisions should consider pregnancy status, drug interactions, prior response, and the presence of comorbid depression or bipolar disorder.
Lifestyle and adjunctive strategies can improve outcomes but are not substitutes for first-line care. Sleep regularity, exercise, caffeine reduction, and stress-management techniques may lower arousal. Biofeedback and mindfulness-based approaches can support attentional control over interoceptive signals and reduce rumination, complementing CBT rather than replacing exposure-based learning.
When anxiety is persistent, clinicians should assess for red flags such as suicidal ideation, severe functional collapse, or possible medical causes. With appropriate diagnosis and evidence-based therapy, many patients experience substantial symptom reduction and improved quality of life. Continued follow-up and relapse prevention planning—recognizing early return of threat appraisals, avoidance patterns, and sleep deterioration—are essential for durable recovery.
