A common behavioral driver is the inability to maintain a “quiet, human-predictable” sleeping space. The concept of designating a private sleeping zone is best understood through sleep hygiene and behavioral sleep medicine: the aim is to create strong cues for sleep and to reduce stimuli that trigger wakefulness.

Quietness reduces arousal responses. Temperature affects vasodilation and heat loss; cooler settings typically facilitate sleep onset. Predictability and privacy further reduce cognitive “scanning” for threats or disturbances, which is particularly important in individuals with trait anxiety or hypervigilance.
For households where co-sleeping or shared spaces are common, boundary setting should be framed as a clinically reasonable approach: the goal is not isolation, but sleep optimization. A “human-only” sleeping area can prevent repeated wake interruptions and reduce conflict-driven stress, both of which contribute to insomnia persistence. If a partner or roommate contributes to nighttime disturbances, collaborative environmental planning—quiet hours, noise buffering, and clear expectations—can reduce the frequency of awakenings and improve sleep efficiency.
When disturbances persist despite environmental changes, clinicians often evaluate for comorbid sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (snoring, witnessed apneas, morning headaches), restless legs syndrome (urge to move legs, worse at rest), periodic limb movements, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, and medication- or substance-related insomnia. Screening for depression and anxiety is also important because mood disorders can amplify arousal and reduce sleep drive. In such cases, treatment is multimodal: CBT-I plus targeted management of comorbidities.
