However, causal inference remains an area of ongoing research because individuals who choose green areas may differ in baseline health, socioeconomic status, and lifestyle.
In clinical practice, green space exposure can be incorporated as a complementary behavioral recommendation. For patients with anxiety, depressive symptoms, or stress-related complaints, clinicians may suggest tailored “micro-prescriptions,” such as 10–20 minutes of outdoor time during daylight, walking in safe nearby green areas, or guided nature-based routines. These recommendations should be personalized considering comorbidities, physical limitations, medication effects, and social context.
Overall, spending time in green spaces is associated with reduced stress, improved mood, and greater physical activity. Mechanistically, benefits likely arise from HPA-axis modulation, autonomic shifts, attentional restoration, improved sensory environment, enhanced social connectedness, and behavioral mediators such as exercise and circadian support. While not a standalone substitute for evidence-based therapy or medication when clinically indicated, green space exposure represents a practical, evidence-informed support for mental wellbeing.
