Pharmacotherapy may include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), which modulate serotonergic and noradrenergic systems involved in emotional regulation. Benzodiazepines can provide short-term relief by enhancing GABA-mediated inhibition, but they carry risks including tolerance, dependence, and cognitive impairment; therefore they are typically limited in duration and carefully monitored. For certain presentations, other agents may be considered by specialists, but selection should reflect comorbidity profiles, severity, pregnancy considerations, and prior treatment response.

Prognosis varies by diagnosis, comorbidity, and treatment adherence. Anxiety disorders often co-occur with depression, substance use disorders, and trauma-related conditions, which can worsen outcomes if untreated. Early intervention improves long-term function. Protective factors include social support, sustained engagement in therapy, and the development of coping skills that reduce avoidance and reinforce adaptive approach behaviors.

Assessment tools support structured monitoring. Clinicians may use standardized scales such as the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7) or the Panic Disorder Severity Scale to quantify symptom burden and guide treatment response. Ongoing evaluation should incorporate functional outcomes (work, relationships, self-care), sleep quality, and medication adherence to ensure clinically meaningful improvement.

Finally, lifestyle and self-management strategies can reduce symptom intensity. Regular physical activity can lower baseline arousal through autonomic and neuroendocrine effects. Sleep hygiene supports HPA-axis regulation, while reducing stimulants and addressing alcohol or substance use reduces physiologic triggers. In clinical contexts, psychoeducation about the normalcy of anxiety sensations and the mechanisms of fear learning helps patients avoid catastrophic misinterpretation.
