When should someone seek care? Urgent evaluation is warranted if paranoia escalates quickly, is accompanied by hallucinations, severe agitation, suicidal thoughts, inability to function, violence risk, or refusal of basic needs. Non-urgent but timely assessment is recommended when suspicious beliefs persist for weeks, cause avoidance, or lead to repeated conflicts.
Supporting strategies include improving sleep, reducing substance use, grounding in verifiable evidence, and limiting consumption of highly inflammatory content. In therapy, collaborative goal-setting and skill-building (e.g., cognitive reappraisal, distress tolerance, and structured reality testing) help rebuild confidence in alternative explanations.
