For potassium, emphasize fruits and vegetables such as bananas, oranges, potatoes, beans, leafy greens, and tomatoes. Dietary patterns that include these foods naturally reduce reliance on added sugars and refined grains, which is important because high added sugar intake can displace nutrient-dense foods and may worsen cardiometabolic outcomes.

Total dietary fiber recommendations generally target an intake on the order of 25–38 grams per day depending on sex and energy needs. Calcium requirements vary by age and sex, with higher needs during adolescence and older adulthood. Vitamin D needs likewise vary, but many public health frameworks recommend ensuring adequate intake via fortified foods and supplements when necessary. Potassium intake targets are often set to support blood pressure and overall cardiovascular health. Regardless of the specific numeric targets, the evidence-based principle is consistent: integrate nutrient-dense sources into daily meals, increase fiber gradually to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort, and ensure adequate vitamin D status, particularly in populations at risk.
