A light snack may be reasonable if hunger is disruptive, but timing should ideally be earlier in the evening.

Stress physiology is a central mechanism linking daytime worry to nighttime insomnia. Psychological hyperarousal activates cognitive and autonomic circuits that compete with sleep-promoting centers. Practical sleep hygiene practices include wind-down routines: dim lights, reduce cognitive load, and engage in low-stimulation activities (reading non-stimulating material, gentle stretching, mindfulness). Relaxation techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery can reduce sympathetic tone and lower mental rumination.

For people with circadian rhythm disorders, sleep hygiene must be tailored. For example, delayed sleep-wake phase disorder often requires earlier and consistent wake times, morning light exposure, and carefully timed behavioral adjustments. In other conditions, sleep hygiene alone may be insufficient, and clinicians may evaluate for obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movements, medication-induced insomnia, or major depressive and anxiety disorders.

Medications and supplements have specific roles but should be used cautiously. Melatonin can help with circadian timing in some cases, yet it is not a universal remedy. Sedative-hypnotics may improve short-term sleep but carry risks of dependence, tolerance, falls, and complex sleep behaviors. Therefore, evidence-based guidelines generally prioritize behavioral strategies and targeted evaluation.

In clinical practice, the impact of sleep hygiene is best measured through sleep diaries, actigraphy, or validated questionnaires such as the Insomnia Severity Index. Consistent practice typically yields gradual improvement within weeks by stabilizing circadian cues and reducing arousal. Individuals should also consider safety when implementing changes—particularly if they have severe insomnia, significant daytime impairment, or symptoms suggestive of sleep-disordered breathing.

In summary, sleep hygiene is a scientifically grounded framework that supports circadian alignment and sleep homeostasis through consistent schedules, optimized light and bedroom conditions, reduced stimulants, stimulus control, and structured relaxation.
