For persistent or impairing symptoms—especially if anxiety generalizes, occurs most days, or includes panic symptoms—professional evaluation is warranted. Screening helps determine whether the person meets criteria for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, or adjustment disorder with anxiety. Treatment may include structured psychotherapy (particularly CBT) and, when indicated, pharmacotherapy such as SSRIs or SNRIs, selected based on symptom profile and comorbidities. Acute symptoms can sometimes respond to short-term interventions, but long-term resolution typically depends on addressing the cognitive and behavioral drivers of worry.
In many cases, practical stress-reduction strategies are highly effective: create a checklist; gather documents early; clarify deadlines; use consistent bookkeeping; avoid last-minute searches; and, where appropriate, seek professional tax assistance to reduce ambiguity. The psychological principle is to shift appraisal from threat to coping by increasing perceived control and reducing uncertainty. When individuals replace vague dread with concrete steps, the HPA axis and sympathetic arousal gradually downshift, and symptoms often diminish.
