Anxiety symptoms may arise from medical conditions (e.g., hyperthyroidism, arrhythmias, pheochromocytoma, substance-induced states), medication effects, or other psychiatric disorders such as depressive disorders, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and trauma- or stressor-related disorders. Clinicians also assess substance use (including caffeine and stimulants), sleep disorders, and comorbid conditions, since anxiety frequently co-occurs with depression and can worsen outcomes when both are present.

First-line psychotherapy includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which targets maladaptive thought patterns, threat interpretations, and avoidance behaviors. For some patients, mindfulness-based approaches and acceptance-based strategies can improve distress tolerance and reduce cognitive fusion with worry content. For panic disorder, patients may benefit from short-term bridging strategies while awaiting SSRI/SNRI effects, though benzodiazepines carry risks of dependence and should be prescribed judiciously. In PTSD, trauma-focused psychotherapies such as prolonged exposure or cognitive processing therapy are core treatments; medications may include SSRIs/SNRIs and other adjuncts depending on clinical factors.

Lifestyle and self-management interventions can complement formal treatment. Regular aerobic exercise, consistent sleep schedules, stress reduction practices, and limiting substances that amplify arousal (e.g., excess caffeine, recreational stimulants) can improve symptom severity. Education about the physiology of panic—how sensations like palpitations and dizziness can mimic dangerous medical states—can reduce catastrophic interpretations and support recovery.

Prognosis varies by disorder type, comorbidity, and treatment engagement. Many patients experience meaningful improvement with appropriate care, particularly when therapy addresses avoidance and maladaptive threat beliefs.
