For relationally triggered anxiety, CBT may include communication skills training, boundaries for caregiving, and reducing reassurance-seeking through gradual behavioral experiments.
Mindfulness-based approaches can help interrupt rumination by training attentional control and changing the relationship to internal sensations (acceptance rather than elimination). Stress-management techniques—regular exercise, consistent sleep, caffeine reduction, and structured problem-solving—can reduce baseline arousal. In moderate to severe cases, pharmacotherapy may be considered. SSRIs and SNRIs are first-line for many anxiety disorders; benzodiazepines may be used short-term under medical supervision due to dependence risk.
Supportive strategies in relationships focus on healthy empathy: acknowledge the other person’s feelings without assuming full responsibility, offer options rather than directives, and maintain calm physiological pacing. Encouraging the distressed person to access their own coping resources reduces over-responsibility. When both partners can co-regulate effectively, anxiety-related feedback loops weaken and recovery improves.
Ultimately, interpersonal anxiety often reflects how threat learning and attachment-related safety needs interact.
