Dosing requires titration and adequate duration, since clinical benefits often emerge gradually over weeks. In some cases, short-term benzodiazepines may be used cautiously for acute symptom relief, but risks include sedation, cognitive impairment, dependence, and withdrawal; long-term use is generally avoided. For treatment-resistant cases, augmentation strategies may be considered by specialists, including optimizing antidepressant dose, switching agents, or adding carefully selected adjunctive treatments.
Because GAD is frequently comorbid with depression and other anxiety disorders, comprehensive assessment of mood, functional impairment, and suicidality is important. Lifestyle and self-management—regular physical activity, consistent sleep schedules, reducing caffeine and stimulants, and practicing structured worry time—can support recovery but are most effective when integrated with core clinical treatments. Early intervention improves prognosis and helps prevent chronicity. Patient education emphasizing the maintainable nature of worry loops and the neurocognitive basis for treatment responsiveness can enhance adherence.
