If one group is socially primed to tolerate discomfort while another is discouraged from using a method, adherence may diverge even when the devices are clinically equivalent. Addressing discomfort nonjudgmentally can improve utilization: involve both partners in selection and planning, normalize titration of condom type and lubricant, and treat irritation as a modifiable barrier rather than personal failure.

Clinically, when condom-related issues persist—recurrent breakage, repeated irritation, or pain—health care professionals can evaluate factors such as allergy, genital infections, biomechanics of intercourse, and medication effects (e.g., topical or systemic changes affecting lubrication). For individuals unable to tolerate barrier methods, alternative contraception (e.g., hormonal methods, IUDs) may be considered, though none provide comprehensive STI protection without a barrier.
