Screening for food insecurity, housing instability, transportation barriers, and utility shutoff risk can identify modifiable contributors. Evidence-based community health worker programs, medically tailored nutrition, integrated behavioral health, and referrals to social services have demonstrated improvements in outcomes for some populations. At the system level, policies that expand healthcare access, reduce out-of-pocket costs, and invest in housing and nutrition are health interventions with biologic plausibility and measurable benefits.

Therefore, the health impact of poverty is best conceptualized as a converging set of exposures—chronic stress, limited nutrition, environmental hazards, and constrained care—producing measurable changes in immune, endocrine, and metabolic function. Clinically and public-health oriented, addressing poverty upstream is not “extra”; it is core prevention that reduces disease burden, improves treatment effectiveness, and strengthens resilience.
