Self-management strategies are particularly relevant when stressors are ongoing. Regular sleep, consistent meal timing, hydration, and limiting caffeine can reduce physiological amplifiers of anxiety. Behavioral activation—scheduling manageable tasks, maintaining social contact, and creating daily structure—supports perceived control. Problem-focused coping can complement emotion-focused strategies: gathering accurate information, clarifying roles, and setting realistic short-term goals can reduce uncertainty. In addition, physiological interventions such as diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and aerobic exercise can lower sympathetic arousal and improve interoceptive regulation.

Warning signs that warrant professional evaluation include anxiety symptoms that persist beyond the stressor without improvement, significant functional impairment, comorbid depression, substance misuse, or any suicidal ideation. Early intervention can prevent progression from subclinical worry to a chronic disorder by breaking the cognitive–physiological feedback loop.

In summary, anxiety is a treatable mental health condition shaped by neurobiological threat circuitry, HPA-axis stress responses, and cognitive processes like intolerance of uncertainty. Organizational restructuring can act as a high-salience stressor that increases perceived unpredictability and loss of control, thereby activating mechanisms that maintain worry and autonomic arousal.
