The central claim embedded in discussions of “longevity” is that resilience—sustained capacity to recover from adversity—can be enhanced when people perceive their lives as serving something larger than immediate self-interest. This aligns with a biopsychosocial model where purpose influences neuroendocrine, immune, autonomic, and inflammatory pathways that determine how the body ages.
Purpose affects stress physiology through several mechanisms. First, it shapes appraisal and coping.
