However, insomnia can become chronic when maladaptive beliefs and learned behaviors consolidate over time. Therefore, clinicians emphasize education about sleep variability, elimination of conditioned wakefulness in bed, and ongoing monitoring using diaries or symptom scales. For individuals experiencing persistent insomnia, a structured evaluation is recommended to identify comorbidities and to tailor interventions to the specific sleep-onset, sleep-maintenance, or circadian pattern.
