Benzodiazepines may provide short-term relief by enhancing GABA-mediated inhibition and reducing physiologic arousal; however, risks include sedation, tolerance, dependence, and impaired cognition, so they are typically limited to acute phases or carefully managed cases. For treatment-resistant anxiety, augmentation strategies or alternative agents may be considered by specialists.
Beyond formal therapies, lifestyle and adjunctive interventions can support symptom management. Regular aerobic exercise improves autonomic balance and stress resilience. Sleep optimization reduces vulnerability to hyperarousal, and reducing stimulants (excess caffeine, certain decongestants) may decrease somatic triggers. Psychoeducation helps patients understand that anxiety symptoms reflect miscalibrated threat systems rather than impending harm, which can reduce catastrophic interpretations. Longitudinal prognosis is variable, but early intervention and combined CBT plus pharmacotherapy—when indicated—often improve outcomes.
