For refractory cases, alternative strategies may include specialized CBT, medication augmentation under psychiatric supervision, or addressing comorbidities such as depression, substance use disorders, or insomnia.
Comprehensive care also includes lifestyle and supportive interventions. Sleep optimization reduces vulnerability to heightened arousal. Regular aerobic exercise can improve mood and decrease stress reactivity. Reduction of caffeine and other stimulants may lessen physiologic triggers. Mindfulness-based approaches and stress-management skills can help patients observe anxiety sensations without catastrophic interpretation, weakening the feedback loop between bodily cues and fear.
A common clinical principle is that anxiety disorders are not merely “worrying”; they reflect interacting biological vulnerability and learned cognitive-behavioral patterns.
