Practical guidelines that align with medical, psychological, and ethical principles include informed consent and shared goal-setting. Where possible, the older adult should participate in decisions about camera placement, recording policies, and who can access footage. Cameras should be placed to minimize unnecessary interior capture (e.g., focusing on entrances, pathways, or high-risk areas rather than private spaces such as bathrooms). Clear notice should be provided, and the system should be configured to reduce constant recording where feasible (e.g., motion-activated recording with short retention windows).

Data security is also relevant to mental well-being: fears about hacking, misuse, or accidental sharing can amplify anxiety. Strong password protection, two-factor authentication, encrypted storage, and limited access privileges reduce perceived vulnerability. Families should establish a response protocol: what triggers an alert, who reviews footage, and how quickly help is offered—ideally paired with non-confrontational communication.

If cameras are being considered due to cognitive decline, clinicians should screen for how the person experiences monitoring. Some individuals may benefit from gradual introduction combined with reassurance and consistent routines. Others may find the interpretation of recording distressing, especially if they experience paranoia, delusional thinking, or confabulation. In those cases, alternative supports—such as medical alert systems, wearable fall detectors, or in-home visit schedules—may better preserve dignity while still addressing safety.
