From a public-health standpoint, effective moderation can reduce community-level risk. Harassment can act as a social determinant of mental health by producing fear, social isolation, and reduced participation. By limiting persistent harassment and improving norms for respectful discourse, moderation can preserve social connectedness. Social connectedness is protective across anxiety and depression models via buffering stress, improving emotional regulation, and supporting access to instrumental support.

Implementation details matter medically. Human moderators may better interpret context and intent, but they can be strained by exposure to abusive content; moderator burnout can reduce decision quality.
