Evidence-based interventions generally target cognition, attention, and behaviors. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) helps patients identify threat appraisals and replace them with balanced interpretations (e.g., recognizing that social feeds are selective and do not represent whole experiences). Cognitive restructuring can address all-or-nothing assumptions and reduce catastrophic meaning attached to exclusion. Behavioral strategies include stimulus control (limiting notification permissions, removing apps during work/sleep), scheduling intentional check-ins, and practicing response prevention (delaying checks until urge intensity drops). If FOMO is severe or occurs with comorbid anxiety or depression, integrated treatment is recommended. Pharmacotherapy is considered only when indicated by the primary disorder (e.g., generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder) and should be guided by a licensed clinician.
Preventive steps for non-clinical levels of FOMO include practicing social comparison hygiene, diversifying sources of connection beyond online metrics, and cultivating offline reinforcement (hobbies, exercise, in-person relationships).
