Evidence-based interventions target the mechanisms maintaining distress. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) addresses maladaptive appraisal and rumination through cognitive restructuring, behavioral experiments, and graded exposure to feared interpersonal contexts. Self-management strategies grounded in psychobiological principles include maintaining consistent sleep timing, limiting rumination through scheduled worry periods, strengthening social support (reliable communication and boundary-setting), and practicing adaptive coping (problem-focused actions where possible, acceptance where control is limited). Regular physical activity can also attenuate stress physiology and improve mood via multiple pathways, including neurotrophic effects and reduced inflammatory signaling.
In summary, social stress can become a mental health driver when repeated appraisals interpret interpersonal uncertainty or evaluation as threatening and when avoidance and safety behaviors prevent corrective learning. By targeting appraisal, reducing chronic stress physiology through behavioral change and, when indicated, medication, effective treatment can break the maintenance cycle and improve functioning.
