If purging, self-harm, or significant electrolyte disturbances are suspected, urgent evaluation is warranted. Even when formal purging is absent, rapid repeated overeating can still produce acute discomfort, reflux, and in rare cases gastrointestinal complications.
Prevention and self-management strategies focus on strengthening inhibitory control and reducing triggers. Practical approaches include planning meals to avoid prolonged restriction, practicing mindful eating to increase awareness of fullness cues, and using coping skills for distress (breathing techniques, urge surfing, structured activity). Environmental modifications—limiting easy access to highly reinforcing foods during vulnerable times, keeping a food/urge log, and arranging supportive routines—can reduce cue-induced urges.
In sum, compulsive eating and food-related impulse dysregulation are mediated by reward circuitry, stress-responsive hormones, conditioning to environmental cues, and cognitive-emotional vulnerabilities. Effective care integrates accurate diagnosis, medical risk evaluation, psychotherapy targeting loss-of-control behavior, and selective pharmacotherapy when indicated, with ongoing relapse prevention and trigger management.
