Geology Teacher Workshop: Scientific Literacy and Environmental Health Literacy for Safer Communities

Geology is the scientific study of Earth materials and processes, including rocks, minerals, groundwater, soil formation, tectonics, volcanism, and erosion. Although the field is often framed as an academic discipline, geology is directly relevant to public health through the environmental pathways that control exposure to hazardous substances. Understanding Earth systems supports environmental health literacy: the ability to interpret how geologic conditions and human activities influence risks such as contaminant transport, natural hazards, and ecosystem disruption.

At the core of environmental health implications are mechanisms of exposure driven by geology. Groundwater and surface water quality depend on aquifer properties, recharge rates, permeability, and the chemistry of surrounding host rocks. For example, mineral dissolution can release naturally occurring constituents including arsenic, fluoride, and dissolved metals; their concentration may vary with redox conditions, pH, and residence time in aquifers. Likewise, soil texture and organic content influence adsorption and mobility of contaminants such as heavy metals or persistent organic pollutants. Erosion and sediment transport—shaped by rainfall intensity, land cover, and watershed morphology—can deliver contaminants to streams and reservoirs, affecting drinking-water safety and recreational water risk.

Geologic materials also shape indoor and community exposures through radon gas and dust. Radon is a radioactive noble gas generated by the decay of uranium in bedrock and soil; its accumulation indoors depends on building ventilation, foundation permeability, and sub-surface gas transport. Geological mapping and soil characterization can identify regions with higher radon potential, enabling targeted measurement and mitigation strategies. Dust exposures can be influenced by local soil mineralogy and erosion patterns; particle size and mineral composition can affect respiratory burden when inhaled.

Natural hazards intersect with medicine through injury, stress, and chronic health outcomes. Seismic events, landslides, floods, and drought produce immediate trauma (fractures, burns, drownings) and long-term sequelae (post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and cardiopulmonary complications). Flooding can also promote microbial contamination and waterborne outbreaks, while infrastructure damage may disrupt sanitation, leading to cascading health risks. Geology-informed hazard assessment—such as understanding fault zones, slope stability, and floodplain dynamics—helps communities plan mitigation measures and communicate risks to reduce morbidity.

Geology additionally informs vector-borne disease ecology by shaping landscapes that affect habitat suitability. While climate and seasonality are major drivers, local groundwater hydrology, surface water persistence, and soil drainage can modify breeding environments for vectors such as mosquitoes. Land-use change that alters hydrologic flow paths can increase stagnant water areas and affect disease transmission patterns.

From a learning and prevention standpoint, geology education supports risk literacy, which is a determinant of health behavior. Educators can help students connect observation to evidence: interpreting topographic maps, reading stratigraphic sequences, understanding the water cycle with aquifer recharge, and distinguishing correlation from causation in environmental data. Classroom activities that emphasize measurement, uncertainty, and causal pathways can improve the ability to recognize hazard signals in real-world contexts—such as interpreting well logs, recognizing signs of contamination, and understanding why proper well construction matters.

In medical terms, improved environmental literacy supports primary prevention and reduces exposure frequency and intensity. It can increase uptake of recommended interventions like radon testing, well-head protection, safe soil management, and disaster preparedness behaviors. During emergencies, understanding geologic hazards supports rapid compliance with public health guidance, including evacuation decisions, boil-water advisories, and safe cleanup practices that limit inhalation and ingestion of contaminated materials.

Training programs for teachers also promote scientific communication, which influences community trust and adherence. Risk communication frameworks highlight that people respond not only to statistical probabilities but also to clarity, perceived control, and relevance to daily life. When students learn how geologic processes can drive health outcomes—such as contaminant pathways from bedrock to groundwater—those concepts become transferable to community decision-making later in life.

Finally, integrating geology with environmental health is aligned with modern public health approaches emphasizing One Health and syndromic prevention. One Health recognizes that human health is linked to animals and the environment; geologic processes influence water quality, habitat conditions, and ecosystem stability. By building foundational knowledge in geoscience and environmental health literacy, educators contribute indirectly to safer infrastructure planning and more resilient community health.
