Sheikh Ahmad Gumi Firmly Rejects Allegations of Bandits, Terrorist Affiliations in Nigeria, Vows to Expose Truth

By | May 26, 2026

Prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has vehemently denied any and all affiliations with bandits and terrorists operating within Nigeria. In a strong statement aimed at dispelling what he terms ‘baseless accusations’ and ‘malicious propaganda,’ Gumi asserted his unwavering commitment to peace and security in the nation. He expressed profound dismay at attempts to link him to criminal elements, emphasizing that his advocacy has always been for dialogue and the de-escalation of conflict, not for the perpetuation of violence.

Gumi’s denial comes in the wake of persistent rumors and allegations circulating in certain media circles and on social media platforms, suggesting a clandestine relationship between the cleric and individuals or groups involved in kidnapping, banditry, and insurgency. These allegations have often been fueled by his past engagements with some of these groups, with the intention of facilitating their disarmament and reintegration into society. Gumi has consistently maintained that his interactions were driven by a humanitarian desire to foster peace and secure the release of hostages, particularly in the often-volatile North-West and North-Central regions of Nigeria, which have been severely affected by banditry.

He clarified that his engagements were never intended to legitimize or support criminal activities. Instead, his approach was rooted in the belief that understanding the grievances and motivations behind such actions could be a pathway to resolution. Sheikh Gumi has, on numerous occasions, called for a comprehensive approach to tackling the security challenges in Nigeria, one that involves not only security crackdowns but also addressing the underlying socio-economic factors that contribute to crime and extremism, such as poverty, lack of education, and marginalization.

During his public pronouncements, Gumi has often highlighted the complex nature of the conflicts, pointing out that the label of ‘bandit’ or ‘terrorist’ can sometimes be simplistic and overlook the nuanced realities on the ground. He has advocated for rehabilitation programs and socio-economic development as crucial components in any long-term solution to the persistent insecurity. His efforts have often been misconstrued or deliberately twisted by those who seek to discredit him and undermine his peace-building initiatives.

Sheikh Gumi further stated his readiness to cooperate with any legitimate investigation into these allegations. He expressed his confidence that a thorough examination of the facts would vindicate him and expose the fabricated nature of the claims. He reiterated his dedication to serving the Nigerian populace through his religious teachings and his relentless pursuit of peace, urging Nigerians to rely on credible sources of information and to resist the spread of disinformation that could further polarize the nation.

He also took the opportunity to call on the government and security agencies to intensify their efforts in identifying and prosecuting genuine criminals, rather than engaging in what he described as a ‘smear campaign’ against individuals working towards peace. Gumi believes that such tactics distract from the real issues at hand and hinder progress in restoring lasting security across the country. He pledged to continue his work, undeterred by the false accusations, and to advocate for a Nigeria where all citizens can live in peace and security, free from the scourge of banditry and terrorism.
