The Houston police Department and Mayor John Whitmire, along with other agencies, have provided additional details about the tragic shooting incident that took place at Lakewood Church. The shooter has been identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, a 36-year-old woman.

FOX 26 Houston is now available on the FOX LOCAL app, accessible through Apple TV, Amazon FireTV, Roku, Google Android TV, and Vizio!

According to Commander Chris Hassin of the Houston Police Department Homicide Division, Moreno gained access to the West side of the church after pointing a gun at an unarmed female security guard.

Wearing a trench coat, Moreno entered the church accompanied by her 7-year-old son. She proceeded to reveal an AR-15 rifle concealed under her coat and opened fire in the lobby. Hassin stated that Moreno began shooting almost immediately upon entering the church.

An off-duty Houston Police Department officer, working an extra job at the location, responded to the sound of gunfire and engaged in a gunfight with the suspect.

Another off-duty officer from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) also arrived at the scene and witnessed the exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the HPD officer. The TABC officer joined in the confrontation and exchanged gunfire with Moreno as well.

Moreno sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Houston Fire Department.

Tragically, Moreno’s 7-year-old son, who was present during the shooting, was also struck by gunfire. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner expressed concern for the child’s condition, stating that he remains in critical condition and offered prayers for his family.

Another individual, a 57-year-old man, was also injured in the crossfire but has since been released from the hospital and is in stable condition.

During the incident, Moreno was armed with two guns. She used the AR-15, which had a Palestine sticker on its butt, while the other gun, a .22 caliber handgun, was found in her backpack.

Commander Hassin emphasized that Moreno had no known connections to any groups and acted alone.

Investigators executed a search warrant at Moreno’s residence, conducted by the FBI on Monday morning. Inside, they discovered antisemitic writings and other evidence linked to the shooting.

Hassin revealed that Moreno had expressed issues with her husband’s Jewish family. Additionally, it was discovered that she had used multiple names, including Jeffery, and had undergone sex changes in the past, although she identified as female.

Furthermore, it has been revealed that Moreno had a significant criminal history, which is currently under investigation. It is concerning that she was able to obtain a firearm despite previous encounters with law enforcement.

Chief Finner confirmed that both deputies involved in the incident were wearing body cameras, and their footage will be crucial to the ongoing investigation.

Mayor Whitmire has urged the community to come together and offer prayers for the victims, the officers involved, and the investigating agencies.

Whitmire described the scene as chaotic but emphasized the unity of the community in the face of such a tragedy.

\”This is a time for unity, not blame. Let us come together as a community,\” expressed Mayor Whitmire.

Joel Osteen, the pastor of Lakewood Church, was unable to attend the press conference due to other commitments connected to his church and congregation.
