Suspected Serial Predator Arrested in Mexico
An American woman tragically lost her life in an unexpected crossfire during an apparent drug deal gone bad at a popular Mexican beach resort in Tulum. The incident, which occurred on February 9, also resulted in the death of an alleged drug dealer from Belize.
The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident. The American woman has been identified as Niko Honarbakhsh, a 44-year-old Los Angeles native. The prosecutor’s office has dismissed reports suggesting that Honarbakhsh and the alleged drug dealer were involved in a relationship.
According to authorities, the deceased man was found with cocaine, transparent bags containing red and orange pills, and bags filled with brown granulated powder, indicating his involvement in drug dealing. The prosecutor’s office believes that Honarbakhsh was an innocent victim who was hit by a stray bullet during the chaotic exchange.
Tulum, located south of Cancun and just a few hours north of the border with Belize, has unfortunately witnessed similar incidents in recent years. In 2021, two tourists, including a California travel blogger and a German visitor, were killed in a restaurant when rival drug dealers began shooting at each other.
Concerns about violence in Mexico have prompted the U.S. government to issue “Do Not Travel” warnings for certain parts of the country, particularly during the popular March spring break travel period. These warnings highlight the dangers of gang violence and the risks associated with using synthetic drugs or adulterated prescription pills.
Authorities are currently pursuing leads and have identified suspects in connection with the incident. However, no names have been released at this time. The U.S. State Department has not yet commented on the matter.
