Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Fatal Plane Crash in Southern Burnet County

Details have emerged about a tragic plane crash that occurred in southern Burnet County, just 20 miles northwest of Austin. The incident took place at a privately owned airport in Spicewood, an unincorporated area of Burnet County. Authorities were alerted to the crash at around 6:30 p.m., and upon arrival, they found the single-engine plane completely engulfed in flames.

The Pilot and Federal Investigations

The pilot, identified as Wesley Perkins, aged 74, was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear and are currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), a federal agency that specializes in transportation-related incidents.

Details of the Crash

Preliminary information suggests that the crash occurred while the plane, a Lancair Legacy FG, was performing “touch and go” landings at the airport. This maneuver involves landing and taking off without coming to a full stop. The NTSB will be looking into various factors, including the pilot’s actions, the aircraft, and the operating environment at the time of the crash.

FAA Involvement and Federal Reports

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers have referred the incident to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for further investigation. A preliminary FAA report states that the aircraft crashed under unknown circumstances, resulting in a post-crash fire. The aircraft was registered to Perkins, according to FAA records.

Community Response and Airport Ownership

Perkins, a resident of Lakeway, had previously worked at Lake Travis Independent School District before retiring in December 2019. The district expressed their condolences to the Perkins family following the tragic event. The crash site is near Spicewood Airport, owned by the Spicewood Pilots Association, known for being the “friendliest airport in Texas.” Perkins also served on the board of directors for the association.

As investigations continue into the cause of the crash, the community mourns the loss of a respected individual and pilot. Our thoughts are with the Perkins family during this difficult time.
