Manor Park Tragedy: Badminton Community Mourns Loss of Kevin Willington

Over the weekend, tragedy struck the peaceful neighbourhood of Manor Park in Ottawa, where the vibrant badminton community is now mourning the loss of one of its own. Kevin Willington, a beloved figure in the badminton world in Ottawa and across Canada, was identified as the victim of a shooting at a home on Birch Avenue on Friday night.

Ottawa police responded to a call for a shooting, and sadly, Willington succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The neighbourhood was left shocked and saddened by the untimely loss of a respected member of the community.

Active Role in the Badminton Community

Kevin Willington, 53, was known for his active involvement in the badminton community. He served on the Board of Directors of Badminton Ontario from 2012, taking on the role of director of coaching between 2013 and 2017. His dedication and generosity were evident to all who knew him.

Badminton Ontario expressed their condolences, stating, “Kevin was generous with his time and always seemed to accommodate our busy meeting schedules. His pragmatic approach will be missed. Kevin has certified, coached and mentored hundreds of coaches across the Badminton Ontario community, and he will be dearly missed.”

Award-Winning Coach and Contributor

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Kevin Willington received the Community NCCP Coach Developer Award from the Coaches Association of Canada in 2023. In addition to his work with Badminton Ontario, he also served on the board of Badminton Canada from 2018 to 2022.

Officials in Ottawa praised Willington for his significant impact on the development of badminton in the region. His passion for the sport and dedication to coaching will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ongoing Investigation

Ottawa police have provided limited details about the ongoing investigation, stating that there is currently no risk to public safety. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection to Willington’s tragic death.

Kevin Willington’s passing marks the eighth homicide in Ottawa in 2024, leaving the community in shock and mourning. The badminton community has lost a dedicated and inspiring leader, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
