Army Air Forces Pilot from Michigan Identified after Eight Decades

Military scientists have made a significant discovery by identifying the remains of an Army Air Forces pilot from Michigan, who lost his life during a World War II bombing mission in Southeast Asia. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency revealed the news on Monday, stating that the remains of 2nd Lt. John E. McLauchlen Jr. of Detroit were finally identified in January after nearly eighty years.

Decades-Old Mystery Solved

2nd Lt. McLauchlen was just 25 years old when he piloted a B-24J Liberator bomber on a fateful mission on December 1, 1943. The mission, originating from India, was aimed at a railroad yard in Myanmar, then known as Burma. However, tragedy struck when McLauchlen’s plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire, causing the left wing to catch fire.

Despite the crew’s best efforts, the plane was unable to evade its attackers, and it was last seen with three enemy aircraft following it into the clouds. Subsequently, McLauchlen and his crew were declared missing in action, leaving their fate shrouded in mystery for decades.

Discovery and Identification

In a remarkable turn of events, the remains of what was believed to be eight individuals involved in a potential B-24 Liberator crash were recovered in present-day Myanmar back in 1947. Unfortunately, these remains could not be identified at the time and were laid to rest as unknowns in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.

However, in October 2020, one set of these remains was disinterred and sent for analysis by DPAA scientists. Through meticulous anthropological analysis, circumstantial and material evidence, and advanced DNA analysis, the remains were positively identified as belonging to 2nd Lt. John E. McLauchlen Jr., bringing closure to his family and honouring his memory.

The long-awaited burial of 2nd Lt. McLauchlen will take place this summer at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where he will finally rest in peace after all these years.

It’s heartening to see that even after all this time, the efforts to bring closure to the families of fallen heroes from World War II continue, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
