Tragic Accident on Indonesia’s Ijen Volcano Claims Chinese Tourist’s Life

Indonesia’s Ijen volcano complex in East Java Province was the site of a tragic accident that claimed the life of a 31-year-old Chinese female tourist, Huang Lihong. The incident occurred on Saturday as Huang and her husband, accompanied by their tour guide, were visiting the famous volcano known for its stunning “blue fire.”

Details of the Accident

While enjoying the sunset at the Ijen volcano complex, Huang and her husband took turns posing for photos. Tragically, as she was standing on the edge of the crater, Huang slipped and fell from a height of 75 meters into a ravine below. The fall resulted in multiple injuries and a fractured left leg, ultimately leading to her untimely death. Police have since ruled her death as an accident.

Warning Signs Ignored

According to reports, the tour guide had warned the couple about the dangers of standing near the crater. Despite the warnings, Huang’s fatal fall serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with visiting active volcanic sites.

The Ijen Volcano Complex

The Ijen volcano complex, located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency of East Java, is renowned for its blue fire and acidic crater lake. While it attracts numerous tourists each year, the area has also been the site of several accidents in the past. In February of this year, a Polish tourist lost their life while trekking at Ijen Crater.

Authorities are currently making arrangements to transport Huang’s body to Bali before repatriating it to China. The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of heeding safety warnings and exercising caution when visiting natural attractions.
