Details of Fatal Shooting Revealed in Body-Worn Camera Footage

In a recent development, investigators have released body-worn camera footage from Clark County sheriff’s deputies that provides crucial insight into the fatal shooting of a suspect in Salmon Creek on April 13. The footage captures the suspect, identified as Benjamin Steven Woods, 41, of Prineville, Ore., pointing a handgun at deputies.

Incident Location and Deputies Involved

The tragic incident unfolded in the parking lot of the American Legion hall at 14011 N.E. 20th Ave in Salmon Creek. Sheriff’s deputies Jim Payne, Michael Gonzalez, Enrique Cordero, and Sgt. Fred Harrison were at the scene. Payne, a veteran of the department since 2000, along with Gonzalez, fired their weapons, while Harrison and Cordero served as witnesses. Harrison has been a patrol sergeant with the office since 2006, whereas Gonzalez and Cordero joined the sheriff’s office in 2021, bringing years of law enforcement experience to the table.

Confrontation and Tragic Outcome

The body camera footage captures the intense moments as deputies confronted Woods, instructing him to raise his hands. Despite initial compliance, Woods made a sudden move towards the building, prompting Payne to alert his colleagues about the gun in Woods’ possession. Subsequently, shots were fired, leading to Woods collapsing on the floor with a visible gun beside him.

Immediate Response and Investigation

Following the shooting, deputies swiftly secured the scene, provided first aid to Woods, and awaited medical personnel. Despite their efforts, Woods succumbed to his injuries. The Southwest Washington Independent Investigative Response Team, spearheaded by the Vancouver Police Department, has taken charge of the ongoing investigation.
