Indian Student Found Dead in the US Possibly Linked to ‘Blue Whale Challenge’

Recently, there have been numerous reports of Indian students losing their lives in the United States, with a new case shedding light on a potential connection to the infamous ‘Blue Whale Challenge’. According to a report by IANS, a 20-year-old first-year student at the University of Massachusetts was discovered deceased in March. Gregg Miliote, a spokesperson for the Bristol County District Attorney, stated that the case is currently being looked into as an “apparent suicide,” as reported by the news agency.

Official sources also revealed to IANS that the student was reportedly holding his breath for two minutes before his passing.

Understanding the Blue Whale Challenge

The Blue Whale challenge game has been described as “abetment to suicide” by the IT Ministry. Participants in the game are given 50 tasks to complete in 50 days, with each task becoming progressively more challenging. The final task of the game involves the participant taking their own life.

In 2017, the IT ministry issued an advisory warning about the dangers of the game, stating that it is shared among secretive groups on social media platforms. The game targets individuals who are in a vulnerable state, such as those suffering from depression, and coerces them into completing the tasks through blackmail and cyberbullying.

Concerns Raised by External Affairs Minister

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed deep concern over the increasing number of Indian student deaths in the US, with a total of 11 reported fatalities so far in 2024 under varying circumstances. While some cases have been identified as murders, others remain under suspicious circumstances.

Speaking to reporters, Jaishankar emphasized the tragic nature of these incidents and the importance of student welfare for India. He highlighted the efforts of embassies to stay connected with students abroad and provide guidance on avoiding potentially dangerous areas in cities.

As the number of Indian students studying overseas continues to rise, Jaishankar stressed the significance of ensuring their safety and well-being.
