The Controversial Incident at the Male-Only Garrick Club

In a recent call to action, Baroness Kennedy KC has urged judges to resign from their memberships at the male-only Garrick Club, citing concerns about impartiality. The issue came to light when Sir Julian Flaux, the Chancellor of the High Court, stepped down from the club amidst mounting pressure on members of the judiciary to follow suit.

Leaked Membership List Sparks Outrage

Last month, a leaked full membership list of the Garrick Club revealed the names of prominent figures, including Cabinet ministers, Supreme Court judges, Court of Appeal judges, High Court judges, and many more. The club’s refusal to admit women has sparked renewed anger and prompted several high-profile resignations, including Simon Case, Richard Moore, and four senior judges.

Baroness Kennedy’s Call for Action

Baroness Kennedy, a leading barrister and human rights expert, has called on remaining judges to quit their Garrick Club memberships in the interest of upholding justice and impartiality. She emphasised the importance of avoiding any perception of discriminatory views that could compromise public confidence in the judiciary.

Challenges to Impartiality

The issue of judges’ membership at the Garrick Club has raised concerns about impartiality in the legal system. Two senior judges were recused from cases due to their club membership, highlighting the potential conflicts of interest that could arise. Baroness Kennedy warned of growing challenges to judges seeking recusal in certain cases, which could undermine public confidence.

Remaining Members Facing Scrutiny

Despite the resignations of some judges, many others identified as Garrick Club members have yet to step down. This includes High Court judges Sir Robert Hildyard, Sir Christopher Butcher, and Sir Nicholas Hilliard, as well as Supreme Court judge Lord Richards and Court of Appeal judges. The revelation of prominent figures among the club’s ranks has further intensified the scrutiny on remaining members.
