It was a tragic day in Brampton when a 33-year-old man was convicted of the first-degree murder of his mother-in-law in a devastating house fire that took place in December 2020. Helder Vertentes-Arruda was also found guilty of attempting to murder his wife, although he was acquitted of four other attempted murder charges.

Details of the Incident

The horrifying incident occurred on Martindale Crescent in Brampton in the early hours of December 4, 2020. First responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a fire engulfing a home where six people resided. Upon arrival, fire crews discovered that five of the residents had managed to escape the blaze.

Victims of the Fire

Among the victims were a 34-year-old woman who sustained non-life-threatening injuries and a 71-year-old man, along with three children aged 11, 9, and 4, who miraculously emerged unscathed. Tragically, the lifeless body of a woman was found inside the home and identified as 61-year-old Maria Correia.

Criminal Charges

Following the investigation, Helder Vertentes-Arruda was charged with one count of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder. The shocking turn of events left the community reeling from the senseless violence that took place within their midst.
