Arrests Made in Connection with Firing Incident in Manipur

In a recent development in Manipur, three individuals have been arrested by the police in connection with a firing incident that left an elderly person injured. The incident took place at Moirangkampu primary school, where one person sustained injuries. The arrested individuals have been identified as Leichombam Jemson Singh (34 yrs), Nongthombam Ratan (47 yrs), and Khumukcham Angamba (32 yrs). Upon their arrest, the police recovered a .32 pistol with 8 live ammunition, three mobile phones, and Rs. 1.5 Lakhs in cash from their possession.

Recommendation for Repoll in Manipur Polling Stations

Following the disruptions and incidents of vandalism during the first phase of polls in Manipur state, election officials have recommended a repoll in six polling stations. The state government communicated this recommendation to Madhusudan Gupta, Secretary of the Election Commission of India, emphasizing the necessity of holding fresh polls in several polling stations in Manipur.

Challenges Faced During Manipur Polls

Amidst incidents of vandalization of polling booths, firing between rival groups, and clashes in multiple locations, around 68.62 per cent of 15.44 lakh voters managed to cast their votes in two Lok Sabha seats in Manipur. The state witnessed ethnic violence and turmoil during the polling process, leading to disruptions and unrest among the voters.

Details of the Firing Incident

The injured individual, Khoisnam Sanayaima, aged 75, was caught in the crossfire as five individuals arrived at the polling station in a car. While two of them entered the polling station, the rest remained in the vehicle. The commotion caused by the firing incident led to chaos among the voters, resulting in the suspension of voting at the polling station. Infuriated voters set fire to the EVM and VVPAT machines at the polling station.

Upcoming Polling Phase in Manipur

In the upcoming phase of polling on April 26, the remaining 13 Assembly segments of the Outer Manipur (ST) parliamentary constituency will go to polls. In 2019, the voter turnout in the Inner and outer seats recorded 81.12 percent and 84.14 percent, respectively.
