On a fateful Saturday morning in Potsdam, tragedy struck when a Norfolk man, identified as 41-year-old Jonathan E. Black, lost his life after being struck by a train on a trestle over the Raquette River parallel to Sandstone Drive. The incident, which occurred at 8:48 a.m., has left the community in shock and mourning.

Details of the Incident

The Potsdam Police Department was alerted to the situation and responded swiftly to the scene where Black was found with a bicycle in the river. Despite efforts by the police department, the Potsdam Fire Department, and Rescue Squad to save him, Black succumbed to his injuries and was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigation Underway

The village police department is currently working in conjunction with CSX to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. Preliminary findings suggest that Black was standing on the tracks facing north when he was struck by a northbound train on the south end of the trestle. Although there was pedestrian emergency space available on the east side of the rails, Black was positioned on the west side, leading to the fatal collision.

Reports indicate that the train’s operators sounded horns both at the nearby Pine Street intersection and upon spotting Black in the path of the train. Despite these warnings, the tragic accident could not be avoided, resulting in the loss of a valuable life.
