Tragic Shooting Incident Unfolds in Elko, Nevada

ELKO, Nevada — A devastating incident rocked the peaceful town of Elko, Nevada, as authorities responded to an early Thursday morning shooting that claimed the lives of two individuals. The suspect, John Joshua Jauer, 42, tragically succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound following his firing from a local business.

The events unfolded when police were dispatched to Sterling Crane on North Fifth Street at 7:44 a.m. on a report of a person being shot. The suspect, later identified as Jauer, fled the scene in a red flatbed truck, prompting a massive search effort by law enforcement agencies.

As the search intensified, streets were closed and local schools, as well as the Great Basin College campus, were placed on lockdown. The gravity of the situation was further emphasized when a sheriff’s deputy reported hearing a gunshot upon arriving at Sterling Crane.

Tragically, Robert Demars, 50, the manager of the Elko office, was found deceased inside the business, adding to the somber turn of events.

The search for Jauer led authorities to Peace Park, where his truck was located less than a mile from Sterling Crane. Members of the Elko Combined SWAT team and Crisis Negotiators were called in to assist in the operation.

During the tense search, neighborhoods were cordoned off, and a lockdown was implemented at Great Basin College. Residents were urged to stay indoors and away from windows as the situation unfolded.

Ultimately, Jauer was discovered in a pavilion in the park, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at Northern Nevada Regional Hospital.

The Washoe County Medical Examiner’s office will conduct autopsies on both Jauer and Demars as part of the investigative process, shedding light on the events that transpired.
