Accident – Death – Obituary News : In a tragic incident in Raipur, two individuals lost their lives after inhaling poisonous gas while manually cleaning a clogged drainage system near a popular restaurant on GE Road. The victims were identified as 19-year-old David Sahoo, a resident of Dhamtari temporarily staying in Khamariya, and 30-year-old Nilkumar Patel from Janjgir Champa district, both of whom were employees at the restaurant.

The unfortunate incident occurred when the two employees were tasked with clearing the blocked drainage. They entered the drain through a manhole, but when they failed to emerge after a prolonged period, their colleagues went to check on them. With the help of other staff members, the two workers were eventually rescued and rushed to a nearby private hospital. Tragically, they were pronounced dead upon arrival by medical professionals.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the victims succumbed to toxic fumes present inside the sewer. The families of the deceased were notified, and the bodies were sent for post-mortem examinations. Following the incident, media personnel who arrived at the scene were reportedly harassed and their equipment confiscated by restaurant staff.

Expressing his grief and frustration, Dinesh Patel, the brother of one of the deceased, questioned why his sibling, who worked as an electrician at the restaurant, was assigned such a hazardous task. He held the restaurant management accountable for his brother’s untimely death, emphasizing that his brother was a father to a young child.

Law enforcement officials have indicated that two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) are being filed—one for the fatalities and another against the restaurant employees involved in the altercation with the media. Chief Superintendent of Police, Anurag Jha, condemned the lack of safety measures during the manual drainage cleaning process, emphasizing the importance of following proper protocols to prevent such tragedies.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with manual sewage cleaning without adequate safety precautions in place. Authorities are urging businesses and individuals to prioritize safety and adhere to regulations to prevent similar accidents in the future..
