The Discovery of Methamphetamine in Fish Ice Chest at US-Mexico Border
Imagine crossing the U.S.-Mexico border and being stopped by Customs and Border Protection officers for a routine screening. That’s exactly what happened to a 34-year-old man driving a sedan through the SENTRI lane at the Calexico West Port of Entry in southern California on a Sunday evening. Little did he know, he was about to be caught with almost 50 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in an ice chest full of fish.
The Detailed Inspection
After being referred for further examination, CBP officers conducted a non-intrusive inspection of the vehicle. Using the port’s imaging system, they identified irregularities within an ice chest in the vehicle’s trunk. A K-9 team was brought in and alerted to the presence of narcotics, leading to the discovery of 25 packages containing methamphetamine with a total weight of 47.13 pounds.
The Seizure and Investigation
The suspect was immediately handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation, and the narcotics were seized. The identity of the individual involved has not been disclosed as the investigation is ongoing. CBP officials praised the diligent work of their officers in combating the trafficking of dangerous drugs that have claimed countless lives.

This seizure is part of Operation Apollo, a comprehensive counter-fentanyl effort that began in southern California and expanded to Arizona. The operation focuses on intelligence collection and partnerships, utilizing resources from federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial agencies to target the smuggling of fentanyl into the United States.
