The Tragic Shooting at Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort
On a fateful day in September 2022, a horrifying incident took place at the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort in D’Iberville, Miss. A 19-year-old man, Karmelo Cortez Morris Derks of Mobile, Ala., recently pled guilty to a charge linked to this deadly shooting.
Derks agreed to a guilty plea in federal court for transporting a stolen vehicle across state lines, following his arrest after the fatal shooting in the casino’s parking lot. The victim, Nicholaus Craig, 36, tragically lost his life in this senseless act of violence.
The Shocking Details of the Incident
Derks and another Mobile man, Darrius Dewayne Rowser, 20, were charged with murder after the death of Craig, who had been living in California. Derks revealed to authorities that he and Rowser drove a stolen Nissan Altima from Mobile to Mississippi on the day of the incident.
Upon arriving at the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort, Rowser allegedly fired a fatal shot at Craig through the window of a Dodge Charger before fleeing the scene in the stolen vehicle. The following day, the Altima was found in flames at an apartment complex in Prichard, Ala.
The Victim’s Story
Craig, who had stopped at the casino’s hotel with his girlfriend, was on his way to Mobile to celebrate his birthday with relatives. After dining at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Craig returned to the Scarlet Pearl where the tragic incident occurred.
As Craig sat in his car due to back pain, he was fatally shot, leaving his loved ones devastated. The murder charge against Derks and Rowser is now the subject of a separate case in Mississippi state court.
Legal Ramifications and Ongoing Investigations
Following the deadly shooting at the Scarlet Pearl, other incidents involving different individuals were reported. The indicted defendants, including Derks and Rowser, were also charged with attempted murder in connection with another incident at an Alabama Walmart.
