Tragic Accident in East Las Vegas Valley

Two pedestrians tragically lost their lives and three others were injured in a devastating car crash that occurred at a bus stop in the east Las Vegas Valley on Wednesday evening. The driver of the vehicle, Cynthia Phelps, 64, was arrested for drunken driving after exhibiting signs of impairment. She was driving a 2014 Kia Rio at the time of the accident and sustained minor injuries.

Details of the Incident

The accident took place on Boulder Highway south of Dalhart Street around 7:37 p.m., according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Evidence at the scene, including surveillance video and witness statements, suggested that the Rio was travelling at a high rate of speed in the southbound lanes of Boulder Highway. The pedestrians, who were waiting at an RTC bus stop for a southbound bus, were struck when the vehicle veered into the westbound lane and collided with several objects before hitting the bus stop.

Victims of the Accident

Two pedestrians, a 42-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy, lost their lives at the scene of the crash. Three others were taken to University Hospital for treatment; one woman, aged 41, sustained life-threatening injuries, while an 8-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl were seriously injured. This tragic incident marked the 49th and 50th traffic-related deaths in LVMPD’s jurisdiction in 2024.

Previous Bus Stop Accidents

Unfortunately, bus stop accidents have occurred in the past in the Las Vegas area. In April 2023, a pickup truck drove onto a Henderson sidewalk, resulting in the death of a pedestrian. In April 2019, two individuals were hospitalized after a car crashed into a bus stop in the Northwest Valley. Similar incidents took place in February 2017, February 2016, October 2013, and September 2012, highlighting the need for increased safety measures at bus stops.
