A police officer was injured in a shooting incident that took place in Statesboro, Georgia on Tuesday night, according to the Statesboro Police Department.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred at around 10 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a man breaking into cars at the Copper Beech Townhomes on Statesboro Place Circle.

Officer Joey Deloach encountered a man matching the suspect’s description and instructed him to exit the vehicle. A confrontation ensued between Deloach and the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Anthony Kent, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

Deloach sustained a gunshot wound but managed to seek assistance from his fellow officers before being taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Suspect Apprehended

Following the shootout, Kent fled into a wooded area but was subsequently apprehended near Brampton Avenue. He was also injured during the altercation and was transported to a hospital before being transferred to Bulloch County Jail.

Legal Actions and Ongoing Investigation

Kent is facing charges of aggravated assault on a public safety officer. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case and is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
