Man goes on shooting spree in Northeast Delhi, killing police officer and injuring another

A 44-year-old man went on a shooting spree in the national capital on Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of a Delhi Police Assistant Sub-Inspector and injuring another individual. The tragic incident took place in Northeast Delhi’s Meet Nagar, where the gunman, identified as Mukesh, shot himself dead inside an auto-rickshaw.

The assailant, a resident of Nand Nagri JJ cluster, also fired at the auto-rickshaw driver before taking his own life. Fortunately, the driver managed to escape unharmed. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown as police continue to investigate the case.

Police revealed that the injured man, who suffered a bullet wound on his spine, is currently receiving medical treatment. The incident was reported to the authorities around 11:42 am on Tuesday, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

According to DCP (Northeast) Joy Tirkey, ASI Dinesh Sharma, who was part of the Special Branch of the Delhi Police, was fatally shot while riding his motorcycle. Another victim, identified as Amit Kumar, was also targeted while riding his two-wheeler on the Meet Nagar Flyover. Kumar was rushed to GTB Hospital for treatment and remains in critical condition.

After targeting the ASI and Kumar, Mukesh forcibly entered an auto-rickshaw. When the driver resisted, he too was shot at but managed to escape unscathed. Subsequently, Mukesh turned the gun on himself while inside the vehicle, sustaining fatal injuries to his head.

The auto-rickshaw driver, Mehmood, displayed quick thinking by jumping out of the vehicle to save himself from harm. The police are diligently working to uncover the reasons behind the tragic events, with a case registered under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act.

Further investigations into the shooting incident are currently underway, as authorities strive to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the tragic outcome.
