Guilty Plea in Decades-Old Sing Sing Murder Case

In a stunning development, one of the two men charged with murder in the stabbing death of a fellow Sing Sing inmate almost thirty years ago has entered a guilty plea. Steven Smith, the man accused of orchestrating the killing of Michael Jones on December 24, 1995, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Monday. The details of his plea agreement have not been disclosed, leaving many wondering if he will testify against the alleged stabber, Allah-Son-Allah.

The incident took place at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, a maximum-security facility located along the Hudson River. All three individuals involved were members of the Black nationalist movement Five Percent Nation. State police investigators discovered that Jones may have been targeted for wearing a cross, which violated the group’s beliefs.

Allah-Son-Allah, formerly known as Gwyn Cancer, admitted to being present during a meeting where Jones was singled out as a target. He confessed to collecting weapons after the stabbing but claimed that another inmate, He-Allah, was the actual killer. Smith, also known as Kaseem, was identified as a leader who ordered the attack on Jones but initially refused to cooperate with authorities.

After years of investigation and interviews with former inmates, Smith and Allah were finally indicted in May 2023. Smith, a North Carolina resident, faced the first-degree murder charge due to a prior murder conviction in Queens. His lawyer declined to comment on the guilty plea.

The trial for Allah-Son-Allah, now 54 years old, is set to begin with jury selection on Wednesday. Despite rejecting an offer for a reduced sentence, he continues to maintain his innocence. The case has drawn attention for its lengthy delay in seeking an indictment, with defence lawyers arguing that their clients’ rights to a speedy trial were violated.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the details of this decades-old tragedy continue to captivate both the public and legal experts alike.
