Melissa Nicholson, a 17-year-old, was found dead in the Shawnigan Lake area on June 11, 1991. Before her murder, she was a victim of sex trafficking on the downtown Victoria stroll. Her story, along with two other teenage girls who were also killed, is the subject of the latest season of the Island Crime true-crime podcast, Sweethearts.
The murders of Cheri Lynn Smith, who was pregnant at 18, and Kimberly Gallup, aged 17, were also part of this tragic series of events in the early 1990s. These young women were last seen on Victoria’s downtown stroll, a place where safety was not a priority and where they were viewed as a nuisance rather than individuals in need of protection.
