Tragic Discovery in a Serene Fishing Cove

The serene Fishing Creek area off the Northeast Cape Fear River was the site of a tragic discovery on Friday evening. A fisherman came across an unoccupied vessel in the cove and raised the alarm when he noticed the owner’s vehicle parked at the nearby Sawpit Landing Boat Access. What followed was a series of events that led to the heartbreaking discovery of a deceased body floating in the water.

Upon receiving the distress call, deputies and first responders from the Pender County Sheriff’s Office swiftly arrived at the scene. Fred Gorchess, a master officer with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, also joined the efforts to patrol the area and gather evidence. The deceased individual was identified as 68-year-old Ivey James Blackburn Jr., a resident of Burgaw.

Details of the Incident

Ivey James Blackburn Jr. was found floating face down in the water, wearing a type 3 personal flotation device. Despite the tragic circumstances, there were no apparent signs of injury on his body. As of Monday afternoon, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission had not received confirmation of an autopsy being conducted, indicating that the investigation is still ongoing.
