Man from Burnaby Charged with Second-Degree Murder in South Vancouver

A man from Burnaby has been charged with a count of second-degree murder after a woman was found dead in a residential South Vancouver neighbourhood.

The tragic incident unfolded in the early morning of April 3, when a resident discovered the lifeless body of a 49-year-old woman in the quiet neighbourhood of South Vancouver. The Vancouver Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the death of Gertrude Cheong.

Reports of screams in the area prompted the police to respond swiftly, with the victim found lying on Rosemont Drive, just north of the picturesque Fraserview Golf Course. The community was left in shock by the sudden and senseless loss of life.

Detectives working on the case quickly determined that the incident was targeted. Their diligent efforts led to the arrest of a 29-year-old man from Burnaby, identified as Eric Lau, who was known to the victim.

Following Lau’s arrest on April 4 by VPD’s Major Crime Section, the BC Prosecution Service approved one count of second-degree murder against him. The swift action taken by law enforcement brought a sense of closure to the grieving community.

Residents are urged to come forward with any information they may have about the case by contacting VPD’s Homicide Unit at 604-717-2500. Cooperation from the public is crucial in bringing justice to the victim and her loved ones.
