GBI Investigating Officer Involved Shooting in Quitman, Georgia
An Officer Involved Shooting in Quitman, Georgia has prompted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to look into the incident. The shooting took place in the 400 block of North Quincy Street in Quitman, a small town in southern Georgia.
Identification of the Injured Individual
The individual injured in the shooting has been identified as Brian Williams, an 18-year-old resident of Quitman, Georgia. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation by the GBI.
Details of the Incident
According to initial reports, the incident unfolded on April 12, 2024, when Quitman Police officers were investigating a previous shooting where a vehicle was targeted multiple times while occupied by several individuals. Acting on information received, police officers spotted a vehicle believed to be connected to the earlier shooting while on patrol.
Upon attempting to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle, two officers in a marked Quitman Police Tahoe activated their lights and sirens. The front seat passenger of the vehicle then jumped out and began fleeing on foot. One of the officers pursued the suspect on foot through several yards in an attempt to make an arrest.
During the pursuit, witnesses reported that the suspect dropped an item on two occasions, stopping to retrieve it and appearing to conceal it in his waistband before continuing to run. Despite verbal commands from the officer to stop and get down, the suspect did not comply, leading the officer to fire multiple shots, hitting the suspect at least once.
Arrest and Medical Care
Following the shooting, law enforcement officers conducted a search for the suspect and eventually located him hiding in a shed in a nearby yard. The suspect was taken into custody and provided with medical care for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound at the scene before being transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
Ongoing Investigation

Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be presented to District Attorney Brad Shealy of the Southern Judicial Circuit for review.
